With just a minute imagination and some simple, reasonable supplies, it's so easy to generate your own homemade Halloween costumes.
Here are a few fun ideas that you can try out this Halloween.
Halloween Costumes
The Laundry Basket
What you'll need:
- Large laundry basket, whether round or square
- Empty box of detergent
- Empty bleach bottle
- Empty box of fabric softener sheets
- Socks and clothing
- Hot glue gun
- Yarn or extra wide ribbon
- Large scissors or shears
What to do:
First, using the large shears cut out the whole lowest of the laundry basket being careful not to leave any sharp edges or loose pieces of plastic. Then using the yarn or ribbon, thread two pieces up through the lowest of the basket to fashion a set of "suspenders" that will be used to keep the basket up around the waist.
With the glue gun, randomly glue some old socks and t-shirts or towels to the inside rim of the laundry basket so that they will hang over the sides after the glue has dried. The small laundry box and fabric softener box can be glued to the top or sides of the basket, while the bleach bottle can be used as a "hat" after cutting off the lowest of the bottle.
The Window Flower Box
What you'll need:
- A plastic window flower box
- Plastic flowers, ivy, leaves
- Green craft foam, Spanish moss or Styrofoam and green fabric
- White craft foam or heavy construction paper
- Hot glue gun
- Yarn or extra wide ribbon
- Large scissors or shears
What to do:
Cut out the lowest of the window box, or the back too if it's too small for someone to fit inside of, and then glue whether the green craft foam, Spanish moss, or Styrofoam covered with green fabric inside the box. Also, cut out two small holes in the box that the yarn or ribbon can be threaded into for a pair of suspenders to hold the box up around the waist.
Now add the plastic flowers, inserting them into the craft foam, and cover with the Spanish moss for an extra realistic touch. Make a flower headpiece using whether white foam or construction paper cut into petal-shaped pieces and attach to the head using a hair band or ribbon.
Other easy homemade Halloween costumes are:
- A box of popcorn: Cover an empty cardboard box with white butcher paper and add red stripes using construction paper or markers. Using a hot glue gun, glue pieces of popcorn, whether real or the type that's used as packing material and painted yellow, to the outside of the box and around the rim. Perfect the costume with red or white pants or tights.
- A pair of dice: Two children can be a pair of dice with cardboard boxes, butcher paper and black dots cut from construction paper.
- Tourist: An easy but fun costume to make is the vacationing tourist using a Hawaiian-type shirt, sunglasses, a camera, a loud hat and a few maps.
- Animals: It's straightforward to make animals such as a cow, pig, dog or cat using appropriately colored sweat suits, a few pieces of felt for embellishments, and some face make-up to draw on the whiskers or spots.
There are countless homemade Halloween costumes that are straightforward to make and cost a fraction of what you'd pay for the boring, commonplace ones you find in the stores, and production your own is so much more fun!
